T.J. Dillashaw Ends Renan Barao's 32 Fight Win Streak, Talks Winning Bantamweight Title

Renan Barao had 32 consecutive MMA wins, but it didn't matter to T.J. Dillashaw. In the main event of UFC 173, Dillashaw captured the UFC bantamweight championship with a late fifth round stoppage. Throughout the fight, Dillashaw landed more strikes than Barao and was frequently moving around the Octagon.

The finish saw an emotional Dillashaw, who was considered a huge underdog, thank his team for the win. Dillashaw is now the first member of Team Alpha Male to win UFC gold.

"I have dreamed about this for so long," said Dillashaw post-fight. "It's unbelievable. I owe [the win] to my team and my coaches. I'm aggressive. I wanna finish every fight and never want it to go to the judges again."

Dillashaw, who is now 10-2, becomes the fourth fighter in UFC history to win gold and appear on The Ultimate Fighter. The title fight was originally offered to Raphael Assuncao, but he was injured.

Barao had been champion since 2012 and earned four title defenses. He's considered one of the pound-for-pound best in the sport. He drops to 32-2 and suffers his first career loss since debuting in 2005.

"All you have to do is believe and you'll get here," said Dillashaw.

Post-fight, Barao said Dillashaw was the better fighter but he'd be back for his belt.
